Thanet in a year…………..

November 15, 2013 by thecurioinmargate

This volume of The Curio represents a year of discovery & development in Thanet. I have documented beautiful & interesting spaces, incredible heritage & architecture, amazing people who live & work in one of the most vibrant of seaside locations & things that might otherwise go unnoticed. Each & every day I discover something new – for a small place there is a lot to talk about, to be proud of & to look forward to. There are still many […]

Margate Museum……………….

August 16, 2013 by thecurioinmargate

Who are you? My Name is Ian Dickie, I am the Chairman of the Friends of Margate Museum, and I have held this position for the last three years. I am semi retired having worked in lecturing, healthcare and catering at all levels. Why do you have such a passion for the Margate Museum? I love history and having moved to Thanet in 1973, I wanted to find out as much as I could about the area. It is important to preserve […]

Paula & Greg…………………….

August 2, 2013 by thecurioinmargate

Who are you? Paula, Greg, Josh and Jake Patton.  Why Broadstairs? It was love at first sight. We came for the day and ended up going home having bought a house. Broadstairs is the quintessential British seaside town. How do you define style? We don’t really have a specific style. We just buy things we love to look at. (Well, when we say we, most of our purchases involve Greg who is a junkyard/boot sale junkie!) Sometimes half the fun is figuring out exactly what […]

Richard………………………

July 26, 2013 by thecurioinmargate

Who are you? I am Richard Harris a 44 year old stone mason who loves and champions Thanet. Why Margate / Broadstairs? We have sea on all sides of Thanet and I manage to see it at least once every day. If you were an animal, what would you be? An Arizonian barking toad. Describe a day in the life of a stonemason? No two days are the same and you are constantly learning, there is always something to challenge you. Object […]

Ian: Peaceful, friendly community, beautiful scenery and a general high quality of life. Hester: This is the closest by to Holland I can get Ian. How do you define style? The Chapel………..

June 21, 2013 by thecurioinmargate

Who are you? I’m Julian Newick, owner of The Lifeboat Ale And Cider House in Margate and The Chapel in Broadstairs. Why Broadstairs? Question should perhaps be “Why Margate?” as that came first. Well, I wanted to run a business close to home in Cliftonville, employ local people and sell local produce. Margate was the only choice for me, and it turned out to be the right choice. Margate’s come such a long way in the last three years! In […]

Graham…………………

June 14, 2013 by thecurioinmargate

Who are you? Graham Ward; painter, writer, archivist and bookseller; currently operator of the Festival Café in Oscar Road, Broadstairs. Why Margate? In all honesty, when I made the decision to move out of London. Margate would have been my very last choice of a place to settle. I made the move to take up a job that promised much but delivered nothing, and I was therefore compelled to think fast, hence the café – and initially it was a […]
